How to overcome the afternoon slump
I love to work, no doubt about it! I like to get up early and embrace the day, getting creative. But sadly, I usually hit an afternoon slump when the clock starts ticking past 3 pm. And I bet I am not the only one.
You know the feeling; you start to get tired, you crave something sweet, you want yet another cup of coffee and if it was up to you, you would go straight home and jump into bed. A wave of tiredness and loss of concentration hits you, and the simplest tasks seem impossible.
So, what do you do?
Here are five things you can do that help you recharge and be productive again through the end of the day.
Drink loads of water
Many of us forget to drink enough and feel drained of energy, because we are in fact dehydrated. Water is needed for the entire body to function well, including the brain, so always keep a bottle next to you.
Skip the treats
Consuming sweets to get energy is the not the way to go! All it will do is give you a sugar-high, leading to a real crash. In other words, you will only get sleepier.
Avoid a heavy lunch
Feeling sleepy after lunch is related to digestion, because the food you eat diverts your blood away from your brain to help with the digestion process. Choose healthful sources of energy that digest the easiest and keeps you full longer. A yummy salad might do the trick?
Get fresh air
Sometimes the best thing to do is just get up from your chair and get some fresh air. Try to make it a routine to go for a short walk (even if it’s just around the building) after your lunch break. The blood circulation created by moving your body will help you focus again, and the breath of fresh air will do you good.
Peppermint oil is said to relieve headaches, improve mental focus and boost energy. Add some drops in the palm of your hand and rub it on your face, but avoid the area around the eyes.
