The power of books
In an age where it’s all about Netflix and chill (and we don’t mean the kind you’re thinking of right now), reading is sadly a foreign concept for many. And much of our daily reading habits center around Facebook updates and tweets.
But why read if you don’t like it you may think? Here’s why:
Like any other muscle, the brain requires exercise, and reading a book keeps your brain stimulated. It’s also said to reduce stress, since reading keeps you focused on the present moment, letting your body and mind relax.
Vocabulary expansion and better writing skills
There is no secret that by reading you increase your vocabulary, but you also improve your spelling and writing skills. This is because reading forces you to look at words that may be new and hard, but then the brain memorizes them and the way they are spelled. The more you read, the more you’re exposed to new words.
When you get lost in a book you usually remember the different characters, their background, the different environments and how everyone in the story are connected. This is because you use your memorization skill, and it turns out the more you use it, the more your memory improves! It’s as easy as that!
So why not give it a try? Start with some light reading, ten minutes a day. You don’t need to dive into 500 pages all at once. Who knows, maybe you find it quite soothing?
